Students worked together to come up with ideas and build their own over the course of a few weeks. Students took turns in groups of 3-4 to work on the different stages of the project. Here are some photos of the process:</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZSYOO1fcGg18mWL2TPsiDK3OaXLr5GBgPmFIlxgI6DPYH8r7e7Qj-y8nqBRC275yAYGBiVib5a_f1zbWv024xV8-1jc96LMOtYXpNudJ-52RhL1IHf5RFSVceW9EkB-lLe9cLav-mJzLgK3qnN7l3x2qBmJ2EI3HeA7sW9GPIcv3yqHI-chTnMYGsMw/s4032/IMG_5887.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; They are now available here: <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/French-Leaf-Identification-Worksheets-Fiches-didentification-des-feuilles-7123234">https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/French-Leaf-Identification-Worksheets-Fiches-didentification-des-feuilles-7123234</a></p><p>These are great for fall tree walks and for french language, science and art activities. I have enjoyed using them as part of an interdisciplinary approach to the Ontario Science curriculum. Students collect and identify leaves. Then they complete a scientific illustration about their leaf. After that we learn about the communities and habitats of the trees and the species that live around our school.</p><p>- Patrick</p>Patrick Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05650192119905171303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3651206453606147606.post-48155809005682817102021-04-05T04:55:00.003-07:002021-04-05T04:59:12.925-07:00Leaf Identification Worksheets<p>I have just added <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Leaf-Identification-Worksheets-6753062">a new resource </a>to my TeachersPayTeachers site that I am excited about. My class had a great time using these this fall. These are worksheets that teach how to identify deciduous and coniferous trees based on the characteristics of leaves. These are cross-curricular worksheets that combines science, environment, art, language and outdoor activity. This resource works well with any age level. It works with the science curriculum, outdoor exploration, student inquiry project, visual arts and language.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VWL3IZ2EvCc/YGr6_DqEV4I/AAAAAAAAChc/wcQ3o60APPg5SpwdgRN6O8EL-GBrsc5_gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1138/Screen%2BShot%2B2021-04-05%2Bat%2B7.56.08%2BAM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1138" data-original-width="896" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VWL3IZ2EvCc/YGr6_DqEV4I/AAAAAAAAChc/wcQ3o60APPg5SpwdgRN6O8EL-GBrsc5_gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2021-04-05%2Bat%2B7.56.08%2BAM.png" /></a></div><p></p><p>- Patrick</p>Patrick Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05650192119905171303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3651206453606147606.post-59717093480746526752021-03-02T08:38:00.008-08:002021-03-05T16:24:32.075-08:00Tree identification Unit <p> I've just finished a new teaching resource that is available on my teacherspayteachers page here:</p><p><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Tree-Identification-Unit-6641761">https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Tree-Identification-Unit-6641761</a></p><p>This resource is a cross-curricular unit plan for Grade 4 Communities and Habitats, from the Ontario curriculum. It is an engaging unit that kids will enjoy and is also fun to teach!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g-VvLbSjunw/YD5pXciXmDI/AAAAAAAACek/VLla7Aw9gmA8DXrr9ZYpRrHHFwbw14yhwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/%2B9%2Bsci%2Bill%2Bpage.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1583" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g-VvLbSjunw/YD5pXciXmDI/AAAAAAAACek/VLla7Aw9gmA8DXrr9ZYpRrHHFwbw14yhwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/%2B9%2Bsci%2Bill%2Bpage.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C8ReY1hC-3A/YD5pXWd8NgI/AAAAAAAACeg/Q73s1Y5fwfsjE5tgYsDCufPuwgTZ4dPEQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/cover.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1583" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C8ReY1hC-3A/YD5pXWd8NgI/AAAAAAAACeg/Q73s1Y5fwfsjE5tgYsDCufPuwgTZ4dPEQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/cover.jpg" /></a></div><span face=""Proxima Nova", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 18px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span><p></p><p>- Patrick <span face=""Proxima Nova", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-size: 18px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></p>Patrick Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05650192119905171303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3651206453606147606.post-82550227465674176622020-12-26T13:45:00.005-08:002020-12-26T13:46:44.506-08:00Scientific Illustration Project + Leaf Identification Unit <p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XOovULE7vhc/X-eugrnKNNI/AAAAAAAACb4/1YclYA7tZGA8EU4w6rjAonjHHMsdURAowCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9508.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XOovULE7vhc/X-eugrnKNNI/AAAAAAAACb4/1YclYA7tZGA8EU4w6rjAonjHHMsdURAowCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9508.jpg" /></a></div><br />This is a fun way to combine art and science. I developed this project this year for the Grade 4 Ontario Science curriculum: Communities and Habitats. This could work for students all all grades. <p></p><p>After working through some fundamental science vocabulary about communities, habitats, and ecosystems, we studied local trees: coniferous and deciduous and how to identify trees based on the characteristics of their leaves. </p><p>We spent a lot of time outside observing and documenting trees and collecting leaves. We then learned about scientific illustration and how to label, classify, identify, how to use a magnification bubble, and how to ask questions about what is being studied.</p><p><b>The final project:</b></p><p>Students create a poster about their chosen leaf. They draw a scientific illustration with relevant labels, questions and a magnification bubble. We got to laminate our leaves and add them to the poster. The students loved it and learned a lot!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9y4nKo4E4E0/X-euVleGfpI/AAAAAAAACbs/jaWYI_bP5pwhZavXjCfHwNbAZHDibDiYQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9483%2B2.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1775" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9y4nKo4E4E0/X-euVleGfpI/AAAAAAAACbs/jaWYI_bP5pwhZavXjCfHwNbAZHDibDiYQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9483%2B2.jpeg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KipT5GAstA/X-euV4CulQI/AAAAAAAACbw/BPXb51F9_iUH39GXe1bEyyaoEBJal0AOgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9509.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1401" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8KipT5GAstA/X-euV4CulQI/AAAAAAAACbw/BPXb51F9_iUH39GXe1bEyyaoEBJal0AOgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9509.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Patrick Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05650192119905171303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3651206453606147606.post-27172718843867635182020-12-23T08:15:00.006-08:002020-12-23T08:16:31.652-08:00Large group Terry Fox Poster activity<p> This in a September/October project that's great to do with elementary students as a large group activity. </p><p>Step 1: Tape a large piece of paper to the white board (in the place where the projector will project)</p><p>Step 2: Project the Terry Fox image that you want onto the paper</p><p>Step 3: Trace a light pencil outline of the image </p><p>Step 4: Ask a student to go over the light pencil outline with a black marker</p><p>Step 5: Show the class an inspiring Terry Fox video and ask them to write down a quote that they feel inspired by (or to write their own sentence about what Terry means to them)</p><p>Step 6: Using different bright coloured- markers, have students come up one at a time to add their quote or sentence to the poster</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oGBMjOy3jcw/X-NtCZUBYJI/AAAAAAAACa4/jRnHgd0B404THV8dgFaj_bAEx-dCT0vrgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9303.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oGBMjOy3jcw/X-NtCZUBYJI/AAAAAAAACa4/jRnHgd0B404THV8dgFaj_bAEx-dCT0vrgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9303.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EX3D7Th3R2o/X-NtClzT4JI/AAAAAAAACa8/DP7EZj4WA0s8A4mMkd_ytb6iWi5kKmxfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9307.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EX3D7Th3R2o/X-NtClzT4JI/AAAAAAAACa8/DP7EZj4WA0s8A4mMkd_ytb6iWi5kKmxfQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9307.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n2sBv92jjrE/X-NtCp-1VXI/AAAAAAAACbA/-SZ1vOwa4K0ZIu9f3oeFJsw_8w2Ye180gCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9312.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n2sBv92jjrE/X-NtCp-1VXI/AAAAAAAACbA/-SZ1vOwa4K0ZIu9f3oeFJsw_8w2Ye180gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9312.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Patrick Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05650192119905171303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3651206453606147606.post-75503253454934835552020-08-25T10:42:00.010-07:002023-01-01T06:00:39.528-08:00Ancient Basswood (at Broadview and Danforth)This is a pen & ink project that I just finished- an old basswood that I must have passed hundreds of times and always found inspiring. This particular tree can be found at Broadview and Danforth avenue in Toronto. My neighbourhood and my city are usually where I get my ideas and inspiration, specifically the natural spaces, urban parks, trails and trees of the Don River watershed. <div><br /></div><div>Here's the illustration in it's early stages:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8mepEWtrQA/X0VM0OW00WI/AAAAAAAACUs/29dIQmlOM4EAitMX0kfY7WUQLSkitSyKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/IMG-8815.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="450" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Q8mepEWtrQA/X0VM0OW00WI/AAAAAAAACUs/29dIQmlOM4EAitMX0kfY7WUQLSkitSyKwCLcBGAsYHQ/s0/IMG-8815.JPG" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>And here's the final:</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BTRTxQNJG8s/X0VM3qBAIdI/AAAAAAAACUw/4CMtXmEkDJw3CukwBcQO1srmrQI0Idp7ACLcBGAsYHQ/s900/S2Broadview.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="675" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BTRTxQNJG8s/X0VM3qBAIdI/AAAAAAAACUw/4CMtXmEkDJw3CukwBcQO1srmrQI0Idp7ACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/S2Broadview.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">- Patrick</div>Patrick Butlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05650192119905171303noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3651206453606147606.post-22902826486805975002020-06-16T15:37:00.000-07:002020-06-16T15:37:26.816-07:00Mandolorian Helmet (Randolorian)This was a fun and challenging project! I've never worked so creatively with cardboard before and I discovered that it can do so much more than I expected. Being stuck at home during social distancing, I've had some time to try projects out of my comfort zone... this is one of them.<br />
<br />
I followed this tutorial: <a href="https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-cardboard-costume-helmet/">https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-cardboard-costume-helmet/</a> and kind of made it my own. I like to call it a Randolorain helmet...<br />

Being stuck inside, we were missing our local forest. So we built it using recycled cardboard and paper mache.<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Zb7f-ekzaqE/XpH420WVTtI/AAAAAAAACJU/qsYXtpKaZgYCqkYO3wtV6hHGHEh_Mi8EQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7567.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Zb7f-ekzaqE/XpH420WVTtI/AAAAAAAACJU/qsYXtpKaZgYCqkYO3wtV6hHGHEh_Mi8EQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7567.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Painted rocks is an easy and fun project that can be done with any age group- and just vary the expectations as the artists get more experienced.<br />
<br />
Start by collecting rocks and cleaning them. Next, get the art supplies you will need:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0GWaygcI4-I/XpH42tfas0I/AAAAAAAACJM/KXkg4kIm24Ay0f8A3mNYCsR-STBkUYtlgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7570.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0GWaygcI4-I/XpH42tfas0I/AAAAAAAACJM/KXkg4kIm24Ay0f8A3mNYCsR-STBkUYtlgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7570.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Acrylic paint, brushes, water cups, reusable sheet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uIId9nLX4G8/XpH42mFUirI/AAAAAAAACJQ/E7M2p1MeCfUS_ZvmqCdokRIIrHIox9ODwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uIId9nLX4G8/XpH42mFUirI/AAAAAAAACJQ/E7M2p1MeCfUS_ZvmqCdokRIIrHIox9ODwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7573.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Choose an idea for the project to develop expectations/criteria. We started with a simple idea: colours - and since we've been learning about Egypt lately- ancient Egypt! We chose red and blue as our main colours and added gold for the Eye of Horus rock.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PB5PJUA_bGE/XnqYz_lW1AI/AAAAAAAACH4/W8ip0_MNZp0y5APPl4F2M-7271v2zpnoQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7243.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PB5PJUA_bGE/XnqYz_lW1AI/AAAAAAAACH4/W8ip0_MNZp0y5APPl4F2M-7271v2zpnoQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7243.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For the third edition of our social-distancing-based Ancient Egypt Projects, we decided to try to make a little sculpture of a falcon. Ours is inspired by some Ancient Egyptian artefacts, gold and turquoise falcon sculptures.<br />
<br />
We started with pipe cleaners, masking tape and card stock base.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m1amyvsh1eg/XnqWF_euK0I/AAAAAAAACGo/qM8pPluxQMgv1lmEUDtMNOTxinDn3MAlwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m1amyvsh1eg/XnqWF_euK0I/AAAAAAAACGo/qM8pPluxQMgv1lmEUDtMNOTxinDn3MAlwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7252.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, we made a rough form of a falcon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JGMGVQyBMKQ/XnqWO1ZYp6I/AAAAAAAACGs/j_cIscgYkGATiYAmJDg6Rk2lVtIhGe3EACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7261.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JGMGVQyBMKQ/XnqWO1ZYp6I/AAAAAAAACGs/j_cIscgYkGATiYAmJDg6Rk2lVtIhGe3EACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7261.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, we taped it in place and started to add masking tape to make it look more and more like a falcon. This type of sculpture involves <b>adding on</b> material to a frame. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MvCiVn7kWC0/XnqWmVaOjhI/AAAAAAAACG4/TVHLO606aP4GPJc8iJ8S8wyDJ9q8Gw_cQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MvCiVn7kWC0/XnqWmVaOjhI/AAAAAAAACG4/TVHLO606aP4GPJc8iJ8S8wyDJ9q8Gw_cQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7265.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OxvwU-cG5kU/XnqWrP9OeVI/AAAAAAAACG8/9GHiKKAVyh04ZruC8Wfd_xCQEeu6S72hACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7266.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OxvwU-cG5kU/XnqWrP9OeVI/AAAAAAAACG8/9GHiKKAVyh04ZruC8Wfd_xCQEeu6S72hACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7266.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Keep adding tape until you are satisfied with how it looks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RKMcXqtJlro/XnqW86wzZ4I/AAAAAAAACHE/ggfrAxj3sDM6PGhCq3ujyOyHqCma4VI2wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7273.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RKMcXqtJlro/XnqW86wzZ4I/AAAAAAAACHE/ggfrAxj3sDM6PGhCq3ujyOyHqCma4VI2wCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7273.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now it is ready for paper mache. Just tear up some scrap paper, get some glue and water, and apply layers of the torn up paper dipped in the glue mixture with a paint brush. Cover the entire sculpture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGQTvztPWe0/XnqXWjjF4JI/AAAAAAAACHM/eOkaBkkh1K8hndYprq5XT-Wno11MAxw5ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGQTvztPWe0/XnqXWjjF4JI/AAAAAAAACHM/eOkaBkkh1K8hndYprq5XT-Wno11MAxw5ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7227.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now it is ready to paint!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cQtyKGKHS5s/XnqXjzFNUlI/AAAAAAAACHQ/a_tiOElk4T8Nhg1uh7NRrTKMzVPWl5CBQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7240.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cQtyKGKHS5s/XnqXjzFNUlI/AAAAAAAACHQ/a_tiOElk4T8Nhg1uh7NRrTKMzVPWl5CBQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7240.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is a simple activity and can be a lot of fun.<br />
<br />
Start by using a ruler and pencil to draw a square-based pyramid net (see below) on cardboard;<br />
then draw or paint on the pattern that the stones make;<br />
next, cut it out and connect the sides together by folding and then glueing the tabs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Some of these would work well in the classroom and as enrichment projects for different grade levels (for example: art for JK, SK, GR1, 2, 3, 4, 5; Social Studies for Grade 4...).<br />
<br />
This will be the first fo several Ancient Egypt-themed arts and crafts ideas. "Melty Beads" is a great concentration craft and has served us well as a calm-down activity. This required an iron, and a "melty bead" kit (available online to order- or in most arts/crafts stores).<br />
<br />
We started our Ancient Egyptian Gods series with a design of Horus, the falcon-headed God of the Sky. We added a sun behind him and chose the colour red to symbolize his domain.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Egp7P_SsIZk/XndodUnYa6I/AAAAAAAACFE/tulQHESZmY4f9i1dy-6SqjBUBrSkVUL_QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Egp7P_SsIZk/XndodUnYa6I/AAAAAAAACFE/tulQHESZmY4f9i1dy-6SqjBUBrSkVUL_QCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7127.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
We then chose the kind, crocodile-headed God of the Nile: Sobek. This was a lot of fun to do, trying to fit in a design of a crocodile head within the confines of the bead template. We chose light blue to represent the Nile river behind Sobek, and greens to show the lush vegetation growing along the river.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CzV67VW_Dzc/XndodMjSwNI/AAAAAAAACFA/DcrxIyK551UgTO5nLdaA0Jnt6AqBR2QzwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CzV67VW_Dzc/XndodMjSwNI/AAAAAAAACFA/DcrxIyK551UgTO5nLdaA0Jnt6AqBR2QzwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7128.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A highlight of Ancient Egyptian culture, the sarcophagus, was a natural choice for another image. We noticed that Ancient Egyptians used a lot of stripe patterns in their work, so we added some ours.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hSS_7lOVYP4/XndodfntccI/AAAAAAAACFI/tY1nttD6BS02xciepCKCz1pHot6GuWSbgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hSS_7lOVYP4/XndodfntccI/AAAAAAAACFI/tY1nttD6BS02xciepCKCz1pHot6GuWSbgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7129.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then we did an image of Bastet, the cat Goddess of the home and fertility. We added the Great Pyramids as a pattern at the bottom as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9_saMcVyZag/Xndoe8UO23I/AAAAAAAACFM/LZVacBexuIQMNNugYm0RCqDKhqmFF7Q6wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-7133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9_saMcVyZag/Xndoe8UO23I/AAAAAAAACFM/LZVacBexuIQMNNugYm0RCqDKhqmFF7Q6wCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-7133.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Lots of fun, and a great calm-down activity that keeps kids enjoying concentrating, working with colour, pattern and creative expression and building fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination- as well as enhancing their interest in Ancient Egyptian culture.<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2EM1EJaemW8/XkrOrisssfI/AAAAAAAACDw/myFKYSn3jYc3YzklgnYIUizygtt8L8xNgCEwYBhgL/s1600/RRRR%2Breal%2Bsaturday%2Bspruce.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="595" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2EM1EJaemW8/XkrOrisssfI/AAAAAAAACDw/myFKYSn3jYc3YzklgnYIUizygtt8L8xNgCEwYBhgL/s400/RRRR%2Breal%2Bsaturday%2Bspruce.jpg" width="264" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a pen and ink drawing of a white spruce (picea glauca) tree from my neighbourhood. It is an old one, taller than a four-storey building. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A good studio project that combines art and science is to try to draw a specific tree species, where the student researches details about their tree, such as:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- is the species native to the region?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- what to the needles/leave/cones/seeds look like?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- what does the bark look like?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
- how old does it typically get?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- how tall does it typically get?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- what is the scientific name for the type of tree?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Then the class can do a gallery walk and learn about different kinds of trees and how to differentiate between them. After, if the project works out, this could make a great art show!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

This is also a good way to train the eye to see magic and beauty in the world. For me, I find it in the parks and trails of Toronto.<br />

Here is a recent example:<br />

This is a great art studio project.<br />
<br />
A few years ago, I complete the challenge and I did it again this year. Although many of the ink drawings are quick and rushed, the point is to have fun, get into good drawing habits and find new ways of working with ink. Here are a few of the highlights from this year:<br />
<br />

Symmetrical Pumpkin ProjectIt's been a busy fall! I just finished <b>Inktober (</b>doing one ink drawing a day for the month of October). I highly recommend this challenge - and it may be a fun class project for higher grades. For the younger grades, my class had a great time doing these Symmetrical Pumpkins.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cFMVWgxBJZU/XbshutC_yrI/AAAAAAAAB-4/qoaXvASfsaYqB2AvfhgDPcy3HJAAIj8vQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-5235.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cFMVWgxBJZU/XbshutC_yrI/AAAAAAAAB-4/qoaXvASfsaYqB2AvfhgDPcy3HJAAIj8vQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-5235.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've just started 2D Geometry in Math, so this project is great way to practice symmetry and to celebrate Halloween with a fun craft project. This is also a great way to introduce the concept of negative space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 1:</b> Draw half a pumpkin on a half sheet of orange construction paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 2:</b> Cut out the pumpkin and then the eye and the mouth. *Keep all the pieces of orange paper*</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 3: </b>Flip and glue the orange pieces onto the full piece of black construction paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

He was part of the Golden Age of British book illustration. He created his work using pen and ink with watercolour.<br />

<br />
After learning about Indigenous history and some Ojibwe creation stories, my Grade 4 and 5 class created this mural in the school library. Each student designed a circle to add to the mural with symbols and colours that represent their identity.<br />
<br />
I sketched the tree on the wall and another teacher drew the turtle. Students painted the tree and the turtle and added patterns on top of the bark.<br />
<br />
It still seems miraculous that we managed to complete this project in 2 weeks! Everyone had a lot of fun and the students will leave a lasting legacy.<br />
<br />
We used house paint and paint markers (for finer details).<br />

A fun and rewarding studio art project is the Symbolic Self-portrait. To do this you will need a projector and some large coloured paper.<br />
<br />
Step 1: tape a piece of large coloured paper to the projector screen<br />
<br />
Step 2: have each student come up one at a time and sit on a chair in profile in front of the projector screen and shine the projector towards the screen (this creates a shadow profile of the student on the paper that you taped up)<br />
<br />
Step 3: trace the outline of the student's profile on the paper (or have students work in pairs to trace each others' profiles)<br />
<br />
Step 4: have students brainstorm things that represent their identity<br />
<br />
Step 5: have students research visual references for their chosen symbols and items<br />
<br />
Step 6: have students organize the space inside their traced profile to draw their symbols using the reference images they found<br />

We used the "Land of the Dead" from the movie <i>Coco </i>as inspiration for a colourful, geometric, fantasy landscape.<br />
<br />
<b>Step 1: </b>use warm coloured crayons to colour a white sheet of paper<br />
<b>Step 2: </b>cover the crayon completely with black oil pastel<br />
<b>Step 3:</b> use a toothpick to draw (scratch away) a geometric landscape to reveal the colour beneath<br />
<br />
This is great way to use a new technique with different materials and practice using the principle of design: <i>contrast </i>and the elements of design: <i>colour, shape and form.</i><br />
<br />
Here are some examples of student work:<br />
